b. Where students live in relation to campus: Students come from many parts of Oceanside. Students can live as close as across the street and as far away as 6-7 miles. For some it is a short walk; some students live right across the street from the school while others might walk, bike, or ride a skateboard from a mile away. A lot of students also while use public transportation such as the Sprinter (train) or the Breeze (bus). Students might take the sprinter and get off at the Transit Center and walk the half mile up to the school or take the Breeze and get off on the bus stop right in front of the school.  Students that live on the military base use the school bus. Lastly, some of the students drive their own cars and park inside the school or some get dropped off by parents.

c. Political Climate of Community: Oceanside is a moderate community. It is very diverse so they are many different viewpoints on politics. For the most part, the city is split down the middle between conservatives and liberals. In 2004, 53% of the people that voted in the presidential election voted for George W. Bush, however in 2008 55% of the population voted for Barrack Obama. This is to be expected given the vast diversity of the city.

b. School Personnel Information

From OHS SARC Report 2007-2008

For the 2011-2012 school year, Oceanside has the opportunity of working with a new principal after a reorganization of principals around the district. Chris Hurst came from a local middle school and quickly came up with new ways to make sure that students were being successful in their classes. A lot of the teachers and administration at OHS have been at the school for many years, which helps out the school since the staff know the diversity of the students and how to best meet their needs.

c. Reputation of School

Strengths:

Athletics: Oceanside High has a very strong football program. The Pirates have won the CIF Division 2 crown for the past 7 years in a row and have a total of 11 titles.  The Pirates also won the Division 2 state title in 2007 and 2009. This makes Coach John Caroll the most winning coach in San Diego history. Oceanside prides themselves in a strong football program with many alumni that have gone on to play at universities as well as professionally.

Academic Support: While former principal Kimo Marquardt established ELP right before lunch to ensure that students received an additional ten minutes to do homework, Hurst and the administration initiated All Pirates Pass. This is a mandatory tutoring program. Students who fail chapter or benchmark test must attend tutoring after school for 30-45 minutes. Special tutors have been hired to ensure that students are fulfilling their academic success. The Academic Recovery Center (ARC) is still in full gear to ensure that students graduate on time. ARC helps students make up credits by taking classes and completing the work online.

Weaknesses:

Test Scores: Besides last year, Oceanside High was ranked 10 out of 10 AYP when compared to similar schools, but in the 2010-2011 school year they dropped to 6 out of 10. Oceanside High has been a program improvement school since 2009, with a lower AYP last year, Oceanside High drops to stage 3.

d. Campus Architecture

From OHS Website

Oceanside has undergone complete renovation in the past 8-10 years and it still continue. With the help of Prop H, Oceanside schools were able to obtain bonds from local business to renovate the campuses. Since Oceanside High is one of the oldest schools, it received a lot of attention right away. Founded in 1906, OHS had old buildings and trailers where learning took place. The track was dirt and measured in yards, compared to the modern meters. While learning was still able to take place, students were not being set up for success.

Oceanside now boasts one of the best campuses in San Diego County. A three story science and technology building was opened in 2003, where math and science take place. The labs are equipped with the necessary equipment to make students successful. All the classes have been remodeled and equipment such as docu-cams have been installed. The gym was also recently remodeled.  Athletics offices were built on the north side and new PE locker rooms were built on the south side along with a new training room. Athletics lockers rooms were also built on the south side. A second story was added with two dance floors and classrooms where PE can take place. The athletics fields have also been remodeled. A softball field was added on the grass field and the Simcox Stadium is probably the biggest renovation yet. The infield is now composed of turf and it is now surrounded by a nine lane all weather track with automatic timing. Under the remodeled bleachers sits a new weight training room and lockers for home and visiting teams. The renovation of the campus is not finished yet. Currently the band room is being renovated and plans are in for a fine arts theater. With the newly adorned campus, OHS can really say they have the right environment to set up their students for success.

e. Participation of Community in School Activities

Health Academy: The Health Academy has sponsored blood drives that have helped local bloob banks and saved lives. They have also raised money for Susan G. Komen for the Cure Race and participated in it, not only to make donations but also to spread breast cancer awareness. Students also help their community by having the opportunity of becoming an intern at the local Vista Community Clinic, Tri-City Medical Center, or The Mission Bird and Animal Hospital.

National Honor Society: This is a club on campus open to students who maintain a GPA of 3.5 and above. One of the main aspects of this club is community service. They volunteer annually in many events local events such as the Oceanside Turkey Trot, Half-Ironman Triathlon, SUN project, and creating boxes for the Rady Children’s Hospital. Some of the events that they host include Kick Butts Day, Adopt a Family, Autism Research Fundraising, and the Senior Ceremony.

OHS Foundation/ Alumni Association: Oceanside High hosts an annual Hall of Fame induction ceremony. It is free to the public and the people inducted are former alumni that achieved great success after graduation in athletics, arts, academics, business, and public service. The alumni association also provides current senior students scholarships to continue studying in college.
